As a community of Change Heroes and through our partnerships with remarkable charities and nonprofits, we have an amazing opportunity to quickly and cost-efficiently provide housing and shelter for hundreds of thousands of families living in slums, refugee camps, and temporary shelters in some of the world's most in need communities.
How it works
Our Shelter Partners
With Techo as our on the ground partner the Change Heroes community is transforming slums into villages by funding and building solid and secure pre-fab homes across Latin America. After being hit hard by flooding thousands of families are still living in temporary housing without a locking door or a secure roof over their head. Together we can help.
By fundraising $3000 through the Change Heroes platform you will have funded all the supplies and labour costs to build a pre-fab home for a family. Together as a community we can quickly build safe and secure villages, free from disease, within a weekend.
With the money raised you will be able to go on a trip of your choice in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras or Bolivia and build the home along side locals and the family in need.
Fly into San Salvador, El Salvador. We will be greeted at the airport by the welcoming crew, and we will meet 100 local volunteers that will be our partners in change. After dinner, we bed down for the night on a yoga mat and sleeping bag in a local school.
Saturday
Build day
On Saturday morning, we’ll meet the families who will live in the homes being built. The families will cook local and authentic meals for us as we swing hammers, erect walls, and secure the roof with a crew of locals. At night we’ll all hang out and get to know one another with some local music and dancing.
Sunday
Build day and key ceremony
Up early and back to the build site, we’ll finish off the home. The family previously living in the slums will now have a roof over their head and a locking door. We present the keys to the family in a special ceremony organized by our on the ground partner, TECHO. Then it’s time to explore the area and relax after our weekend build.
Monday
Bikes, beaches, and monkeys
In Puerto Barillas we’ll do a bike tour to visit a community of monkeys and interact with them. From there we will do a cacao tour to learn about the local industry. We’ll head back to the beach to our hotel in La Libertad.
Tuesday
Surf, sunsets and turtles
In La Libertad we’ll have the option to surf any of the many beaches nearby, or head to the Sea Turtle Conservation—or just explore the area before watching the spectacular sunset.
Wednesday
Transfer to airport
Enjoy a breakfast at the hotel before we’re transported back to the airport to fly home. The Change Heroes team will update our team on the status of the community and families in the months and year to come.
